Dear all,
It has come to my attention that the NYC ACC is handing any birds it receives (without even documenting them in its records) to Mark Marone of "Parrots of the World" petstore on Long Island.
I wonder when they will start handing dogs to the puppy mills.....
It's essential that you write/call NYACC about this. Giving a parrot to Mark Marrone is the same as putting the bird on a boat to Spain, because that's where the birds he takes in go -- to a breeder in Spain. If they don't work out? God only knows. People have no idea. I got this from Ritchie King, of King Cages--who was trying to get me to participate in the scheme.

Do they also give birds that are found to him? I see that someone lost her beautiful beloved bird in Manhattan and is offering a $5,000 reward for it's safe return. It is really amazing what awful decisions that shelter managements make, some are willing to let animals go any place good or bad, and some won't allow even the best homes to adopt. I volunteered in a shelter for over 25 years and saw such diverse things. Homeless animals of all kinds are subject to the whims of the powers that be and often it doesn't have a happy ending. Make your voice heard!!! |

I find this very hard to believe. Has anyone verified this information? If you hear back from the folks at CACC will you please post their official reply?
If this is true it's worthy of some type of expose in the media. This would indeed by a very stupid move...ADDING to the bird overpopulation problem!

Bird Camp in Manhattan also has gotten birds from them and sold them. The problem is bigger than you think. |

Thank you so much for posting this disturbing piece of news! Although I am in Indiana, I have forwarded copies to two very committed animal advocates in your area...Laurie Bleier of Brooklyn Area Friends Network, and Katia Grossman, a wonderful woman who is tireless, and will do whatever it takes to save animals. I will be awaiting the emails, and am totally sick of all the ignorant crap that continually goes on in what should be a 'world class' facility. NY Animal Control finally gets rid of the dreaded Charlene Pedrolie (female Hitler), and now decides to traffic in the poor birds! Wow, what else are they hiding? Deb Conner |

So what's wrong with giving displaced birds to Marc Morrone? At least he knows how to take care of them! There are a lot worse places they could go. |

A shelter's job is to ADOPT and not give back to petstores where they can be sold for breeding and thereby adding to the millions of homeless birds. There is no more room at honest sanctuaries for all the homeless birds, so people are forced to place their birds at sanctuaries that are not that honest and good for the birds. As you know, we do not need to breed more birds. Birds should not have to be forced into a hostage situation by greedy people, or people who are less than compassionate. |

The following is an email that we received from the Animal Care & Control with regard to the above situation. In the event that the AC&C does decide to adopt birds out in the future, we will post where you can obtain a pre-adoption questionnaire and application form and how one can be obtained.
Anna,
As per our conversation, I would like to reiterate that AC and C rarely receive unwanted parrots/parakeets. In fact we only received approximately 10 this past year. Although we do not advertise bird adoptions (due to the limited volume that we receive), we do have a bird adoption policy that strives to ensure the bird will be placed in a responsible home.
Within the past year we forwarded only five Parakeets and one Quaker to Mark Marrone. Although Mark does own a pet shop, we have known Mark to be a very knowledgeable person on birds, as well as many other species. He operates a very clean pet shop and always sets up his animals with the proper housing, temperature and nutrition. Mark is very well known and works as an on air advisor to the Martha Stewart show. We agree that unnecessary breeding and/or hoarding of parrots/parakeets is inhumane, so we will consider the idea we discussed about creating a bird adopter list in the case that we receive birds in the future and will then be available to contact potential adopters immediately. We would appreciate any assistance you can provide in this area. Mike Pastore-Director, Field Operations - AC and C of NYC |

I am glad you guys got on this. A pet shop owner who sells animals is not the ideal adopter to say the least. |

I know Mark Marrone, and he is an expert on birds. He is also one of the only licensed falconers in N.Y. State, from what I understand. However - - as an animal behaviorist, specializing in the training of dogs (and cat issues), I have to say that he oversteps his bounds when he advises on the training of animals other than birds. A dog trainer he's *not*. And the advice that he gives, on the Martha Stewart show, is usually just enough rope with which people might hang themselves, thinking they "know" something. The techniques he *briefly* "summarizes", are incomplete, and full of holes. He would do better to advise people on how to find and discern a decent behaviorist/trainer. As for Martha Stewart being given as a reference - - ever! - - in anything! - - I have to say that this woman is an unconscionable source of information. Even her cooking instructions are horrendously irresponsible, in that she recommends the use of *Canola oil* - - a poisonous ingredient, that is not meant for consumption, which has been outlawed in Great Britain, because they have linked it to "mad cow" disease, and believe it to be linked to Jacobs-Kreutzfeld disease (spongiform encephalopathy) in humans. Anyone who has done their homework knows that no living thing should be fed Canola oil. In regard to animals, Ms. Stewart so apparently *objectifies* "household pets", that it is unthinkable, to me, that she should be regarded as an "expert" of any kind, in address of *live* animals, or given as a reference for any animal-care practitioner. I was *howling*, when I watched and listened to Mr. Marrone and her lecture on the care and training of puppies! (Let's not even go into my opinion of Stewart's exhibiting of her dying Chow, with the animal, obviously in pain, and finding it difficult to stand, hoisted and thrown unceremoniously up onto her slippery marble kitchen counter, for display, and left, without padding or physical support, to slip, slide, and ultimately collapse [nearly falling off the counter], during his "farewell" show). Mark Marrone has made himself very helpful to those with bird problems, but I observe that he has spread himself sufficiently thin to have to be making some grave mistakes and oversights, and to be compelled to cut some corners on his protocols. Pertaining to the puppies and kittens he sells in his pet shop, regardless of how well they may be kept, the presence of such animals for sale in a store, with all it implies, flies in the face of the prudent judgements that have been made about this matter, over the past decade, and presents a reasonable and significant question of personal ethics, integrity, and protocols. |

You were doing find until this-while Martha Stewart and just about everything she does is garbage, there's no proof canola oil is a poison or causes Creutzfeldt-Jakob.

Doesn't the North Shore Animal League buy dogs from China? What is with these rescue organizations and their involvement in selling animals for profit?

Maybe Mark Marrone is taking nice care of the birds - or maybe not. Mark Marrone is a breeder. I know this, because I know people that have bought animals from him, that he bred himself. Those same idiotic people than bred their animals. So as you can see, he is not in business to help the overpopulation issue with various pets. What an ass Pastore is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
