I live in a co-op. For years I've been helping pigeons with food shelter and medical aid. I get assistance from Wild Bird Fund and I've been helping them with orphaned and sick birds.

But for years, certain neighbors have been filing complains and harassing me about this and other things. Because of these complains my apartment has been inspected four times in the last couple of years. These inspections have been very difficult on me but specially difficult on pigeons whom I had to stop helping for several weeks each time and had to find a temporary home for young, sick and injured ones.

I know that these harassments are not going to stop unless I do something about it. I am trying to find the best attorney specializing in these matters who can hopefully help me in getting these nasty individuals of my back. If anyone knows of one, please post it here or I can maybe somehow give you my email or cell phone but I am trying to hide my identity regarding this since there is no way of knowing who is reading this forum.

Thank you!

Hi, I am an attorney on the animal law committee of the New York City Bar Association. I cannot help you because of the nature of my employment, but if you like, I can forward your information to my committee and see if anyone else can help.

Thank you... Karen Copeland does seem to be one of the very best for what I am looking for. I'll call her tomorrow. I've spoken to two attorneys already but I would rather deal with a person who cares for and respects animals. It seems that Karen does, while I am not sure if these other attorneys do. I just hope that she has the time for this.

Hi Lori!

It would be appreciated if you forward this information to your committee. Please get back to me here if there is anyone who wants to at least give me an objective legal advice. By the way, I will pay for their time, etc. Since, no legal action has been initiated against me yet, an advice and some help with a strategic plan is maybe all I need at this time.

The person who is having trouble with her co-op can send me an e-mail.  I like pigeons (I used to raise them as a boy), and am a lawyer who specializes in landlord/tenant law.

You may want to contact this lawyer:  Darryl Vernon, 212.949.7300 (x201). He works on tenant issues related to animals.  Best of luck.

I've been in a similar situation for years. I feel that my rights are being violated every time I am harassed by neighbors (usually it is doormen or supers). I even called the police at one time because this nasty woman super kept harassing me. The cops asked me if I was feeding in front of her building and when I said no they went to her apartment. She stopped but then her husband started with the harassment, my husband "takes care" of him. This super even sent a threatening looking African American man to follow another bird feeder that comes around here!
One asshole guy who lives a couple of building away from mine had the nerve to talk to one of my coop board members, who happened to be a nice guy and did not pay him much attention. But this asshole's intention was obviously to cause me grave harm. That is harassment.
I am so fed up with the whole situation and although I keep helping the birds, I have to be so sneaky about it, it is absurd! I am not a criminal, just an animal lover.
It is NOT illegal to feed the birds, but it is illegal to harass people.
I think that people who care for pigeons and other city wildlife need to get together and talk collectively with a lawyer to defend our rights. We need to stop this "witch hunt".

give people a little bit of authority and they WILL often get quite carried away.
especially if you are living in a nice building with a doorman - they're more often than not a bit resentful of their perception of your wealth etc.  And so, when the opportunity presents itself - they do like to boss people around.   Sometimes a little greasing of the palms can help with these things - you might get a warning or some helpful information as a result.   Sad one has to pay for such things but...
