There is -- or was -- a public health issue that's sort of dropped off the radar; we natter on about H1N1, but H5N1 -- avian flu -- will come almost certainly through these live-poultry places.

H5N1 is a normal waterfowl gut virus.  It is shed in poop.  Chickens in a common environment get the virus, which for them is not normal and highly infectious.  I suspect that having these birds in the same space as rabbits -- mammals, like us -- increases the zoonotic potential, I should think.

The ætiology was worked out in the preliminary studies for an epidemiological project by Simon Starkey, BVSc, PhD, currently the senior associate vet at Center for Avian & Exotic Medicine.

Perhaps Humane Society, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine can help.
Also, Farm Sanctuary, Watkens, Glen, NY or Humane Farming Association may investigate. (They work to specifically protect animals raised for food.
Woodstock Animal Sanctuary may take a hen, but I hear roosters are hard to place.

We tried to catch a chicken in Hell's Kitchen last week, but couldn't then she was gone the next day.

Very sad.
I so much appreciate the caring for these poor animals.

Try joining Farm Sanctuary, Watkins Glen, NY. They have an advocacy team. from their web site: Joining ACT is easy. Just fill out the form. And, remember, a compassionate world begins with you.
For more information, resources, or general ACT assistance, contact us at activist@farmsanctuary.org or 607-583-2225 ext. 229.

Check out Human Farming Assocation. http://www.hfa.org

See: http://www.woodstockafs.org - "An illegal Halal slaughterhouse in the Bronx was ordered to close its doors and the ASPCA, thankfully, was there to seize the animals. Over 100 so-called “live kill” markets are peppered throughout the NYC area, serving Halal and Kosher needs, as well as others who want to select their meat in living form. These places are so notoriously run that the NY State legislature recently voted to freeze any further licensing of new markets."  see web site for entire article.

Check out PETA's action team:

check out the articles on PCRM and get alerts on how to advocate:
network.asphttp://pcrm.org/health/veginfo/fast_food_phip.htmlGrilled Chicken Contains PhIP, a Cancer-Causing Chemical

Most people know that fried chicken is not a healthy food, but how many realize that consuming grilled chicken can increase the risk of cancer? Tests of grilled chicken from fast-food outlets—including Burger King and McDonald's—have revealed substantial amounts of a carcinogenic chemical in all samples tested.

Hope some of this helps.
Best wishes to all,
Monica

Of course it is terribly painful to read & hear about such atrocious suffering of animals at the hands of evil people, but we have to know. I am so sick of the idea that there is no recourse for these animals by any agency. We have to change this - therefore no matter how heart breaking, as many people as possible have to have their eyes open to the horror. And thank you for all that you do!!

Dear Felicity,

people may indeed do evil things, but they are not themselves evil.  When they do evil things, it is because they are trying to do good, but are ignorant of what the good is, and mistakenly believe it has to do with satisfying their temporary base mood or appetite.

There is something of God in all people, and in all animals.  That is why, when it comes to people, we must always be prepared to forgive, and to instruct.

There is a live chicken and rooster market in Harlem on the corner of West 126th Street a few blocks east of the #1 subway line.  I used to pass by in horror when I lived in that area.  I hope someone investigates.

Hi Dolores,

I know that place - La Pera Brothers ... it's a hell hole.  I cringe every time I drive past it.  I got kicked out of there back in the late 1980's or early 1990's for taking pictures.   We were having a demonstration outside, and I walked in to take some pictures.  One of the owners instructed me to leave, but I kept taking pictures.  I think he would have hit me, except that the cop monitoring our demo came in and prevented him from doing so.

They kill all kinds of animals in there.
