To Whom This May Concern,

Mr. Leno and Mr. Rock has a most disturbing exchange that you allowed the network to air, without a disclaimer. The exchange in question was this:

Jay Leno: "It's amazing to me that you mistreat a dog and you lose your career and go to jail for two years."

Chris Rock: "What the hell did Michael Vick do, man? A dog, a pit bull ain't even a real dog. A pit bull, that's the white stuff. Dogs are white mans best friend - dogs have never been good to black people."

Let's be very clear about the facts here. Mr. Vick did not "mistreat" those lovely animals, he tortured them. Not only did he torture the animals, he profited from the gambling on the "fights" he helped to sponsor. Mr. Vick did not lose his career, is alive and well playing for the Philadelphia Eagles earning far more money than most people will ever see in their entire lifetimes. Mr. Leno did get the jail sentence correctly.

Mr. Rock proclaimed that dogs are somehow not friends of Black people. This is patently untrue, as most anyone can see for themselves strolling down most city and suburban streets where dogs accompany their human friends of all colors, shapes, sizes, and ages. Mr. Rock did point out that canines are used to sniff out illegal substances with his references to his carrying marijuana in an airport. This is true, but the dogs sniff out the drugs, not the color of the person fool enough to get caught.

Mr. Rock then insinuated that somehow pit bulls are not real dogs. This is patently absurd. Pit bull is a term commonly used to describe several breeds of dog in the Molosser family. A breed that was bred to act as nursemaids for small children. A breed known and loved for their loyalty to their humans. The statement made perhaps to elicit a laugh from the audience only fuels the ever-growing myth that this breed is somehow dangerous. It is not the breed, it is the owners who raise these animals to perform heinous acts. We would not condemn a human for fighting back in response to torture, why then do we suppose that pit bulls should be any different? All creatures have instincts to preserve themselves, it is ludicrous to blame these dogs for doing anything less. In fact, they only prove their loyalty to their humans by fighting, tragic as that may be.

I am all for free speech, and the right for people to hold their own opinions, but when celebrities espouse such nonsense, and the networks support and allow it, perhaps it is time for a change in policy?

During the same interview, both Mr. Rock and Mr. Leno condemned the actions of Mr. Polankski for the rape of 13 year old girl. Why is the rape, torturing and murder of pit bulls somehow a lesser crime? They have no voice, they cannot defend themselves, nor can they speak out against slanderous statements. Are you, the network going to continue to allow so much misinformation to be presented and applauded? Even Mr. Vick has recognized that he made a terrible mistake. It's your turn now.

Call it the Michael Vick reward.

Amid a steep rise in dogfighting complaints this year, Pennsylvania authorities are offering up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in dogfighting.

The reward was announced yesterday in Philadelphia by the state attorney general's office and the Humane Society of the United States. It also applies to other animal combat, such as cockfighting.

The Pennsylvania SPCA has reported receiving more than 400 complaints about dogfighting in the first six months of this year. That's up from 245 complaints during all of 2008.

Dogfighting gained renewed attention in Philadelphia after the Eagles signed Vick, who had served prison time for his role in a dogfighting ring in Virginia.

The reward is funded through a grant from the Holland M. Ware Charitable Foundation.

I am truly disappointed in the off the cuff remarks of both Jay Leno and Chris Rock regarding Pit bulls or the reference that hurting any animal is condoned because it is "only an animal". I am certain that they made those remarks in the contents of comedy because I don't believe for one minute that either Leno or Rock would ever hurt an animal. My daughter and I rescued an 8 month old Pit bull two months ago from the Van Nuys Shelter and were so proud and thrilled that we did it that we have been elated ever since. Her name is Ava, she is pure while, and her ears stand up like a bunny. She is adorable and loving and an addition to our family that before included one Chihuahua named Diablo who ruled the roost. After barely two months together they are inseparable. Pit bulls are amazing and super intelligent. It is people who train them to fight for their lives or people who make thoughtless remarks about the breed such as Leno and Rock did that keep so many in shelters and from being adopted. I support every effort to shelter, adopt and rescue animals and give each one every opportunity in the world to enjoy a loving home with people who cherish them.

I suspect that what Chris Rock was actually referring to was the legacy of Ku Klux Klan use of pit bulls.  The KKK controlled professional dogfighting and pit bull breeding for the first 75 years of the 20th century,  and were notorious for using the "white dog" tactic to keep black people out of white neighborhoods.

A "white dog" was a pit bull trained to attack people of color.  Klansmen would drive into a mixed neighborhood and release a few pit bulls to savage any black people they found,  then whistle them back to their vehicle and abscond.

This was very common in the 1950s and 1960s, and a case just surfaced in Calgary this past summer.  Two 80-year-old men and two little girls were mauled in the series of attacks.  One woman was eventually arrested, but the two men she was working with were still at large, the last I heard.

Jay.  I'm really ashamed of being a fan.  I know you have a heart.  Where is it?  I have always admired your wonderful sense of humor and good taste in your jokes.

Dogs are not born vicious and that includes Pit Bulls.  It's people like Michael Vick who exploit the breed.  Pit Bulls are extremely loyal to all mankind and that includes all races.  Chris Rock's comment was not funny and really showed his stupidity and lack of compassion.

Chris Rock doesn't deserve the kind of unconditional love and loyalty from any dog after making those comments.  I hope some day he will know and understand the meaning of man's best friend, or perhaps he's just not worthy to receive that kind of devotion.

Michael Vick on the other hand, is a cruel bastard.  Vick deserved more than what he received for his cruelty.  I am glad he went to jail and he had a career adjustment.  Perhaps he now understands the consequences of his actions and his brutality and cruelty.  I hope some good will come of it and he will educate others.

I enjoy humor, but when reckless remarks on national television further encourage disrespect and contempt for animals, those remarks are irresponsible.

I encourage you and Chris Rock to meet some of the Pit Bulls rescued from Vick's property.  Several have become therapy dogs.  Those dogs bring love and joy to those less fortunate.
