Hello dear friends.

One of my canaries got her paw caught in the cage between a bar and a rigid piece of plastic I had carefully put on top of the food dishes along the bars to keep the poop out of the food.  I immediately removed the piece of plastic of course....however, I noticed that Marmalade has a sore paw.  It is red and a tiny bit swollen above the knee if I can say that....She flies but when she lands, she has a hard time and does favor the other foot.

Her two feet look the same so I don`t know if anything is broken.  She is sitting on a perch on the top of the cage but she is a big crooked on the perch so I`m sure it must hurt.   There are no avian vets at all in this area and I`m not sure that a cat and dog vet would know much about birds.

Is there anything I can do on my end or do I wait a bit to see how she reacts.  It`s 11:09 PM Monday evening here.  She is quiet with the two other canaries in the cage...I`m hoping she is sleeping so she can rest.

Please help and your suggestions are welcome.

Thank you.

Hi Melle,

Canaries don't have paws, but feet just like us. Whenever they injure their feet or leg it does hurt and some times it could be fractured. The only way to tell would be an x-ray, but you mentioned that there are no avian vets near you. I would still try and find an avian vet and have him/her check it out.

In absence of an avian vet you should watch it very closely and see if it starts to get better in the next day or so. If not then you should suspect a fracture. Does the leg appear to be bent or out of shape in any way? If not then perhaps it will be lucky and hopefully it is a bruise.

Please post again in a day and let me know what is happening. If it is a fracture I will give you some advice then, but you should still consider an avian vet.

Good luck,

Marty

also if its probable brake

and you happen to have another cage/ hospital cage, you should have her be alone. let her faver her foot. watch but don't handle if unnecessary. if it's not bent it still can become so watch closely. any brake will heel in 2-3 weeks, crooked or not, so keep your eye peeled, let her relax- don't make her jump etc. remove unnecessary perches leaving one or two, low to a padded tray.

try try try to find a vet. if it becomes seriousely broken without a vet, you'll need to splint it youself. if it's strait, let her baby it well, keep her calm.

please keep us updated.

Sounds like she bruised her FOOT. I would put some Neosporin on it as that is soothing.

This happened to my lovebird.  I took him to the vet and came home with antibiotics to give him twice a day for 10 days.  Your bird may not be as severe - mine was cut.  But if it swells I recommend taking him to a veterinarian.  If you can't do that, isn't there some kind of antibiotics that we can buy over the counter?

Hi everyone

I transferred Marmalade to a small cage last night and put a little nest so she could rest easily.  I put in a bath too in case she decides to go in.  You can tell it`s bruised all the way up the foot but she still moves around.  I have a few goodies in there and will pad the bottom for extra comfort.  The foot is not deformed or bent.  It`s the same shape as the other foot except it`s red and you can tell that she got caught from the very top of the leg going down toward the middle of the foot.

I will keep a close eye on her very carefully and let you know.  Is peroxide a good thing?  I don`t dare try to touch the foot to put neosporin on it.  I`m afraid to hurt her.

Thank you for your kind assistance.  I will watch my little feathered friend closely.  She drinks and eats like before so that`s always a plus.

Thank you again.

Hi Melle,

I am glad to hear from what you have mentioned that her leg doesn't seem to be fractured. It does sound like an abrasion rather then a fracture, and it should heal within a week or so.

Do not use  Peroxide on this because it will irritate her leg and foot. Neosporin will sooth it but you will first have to catch her and that will probably make it worse. I would just leave it alone for the time being and you must keep a very watchful eye on her to make sure there is no infection brewing.

Once it starts to heal which should be in another two days then you can gently catch her and use Neosporin or better still a product called Bag Balm, and put either on a Q-tip and very gently apply it to the affected area.

Good Luck,

Marty

oh and the 2-3 week heal is not strong btw. it's just a good set and time for a splint to come off.
usually if there's a break, she will do anything to stay off it including using her wing as a crutch by spreading it out like a kickstand on the hurt side.
if it's not a break, she will use it more and more in a much shorter time, sometimes within the same day. still make her rest and strengthen  for an extra week or so after everything appears to be back to normal.
if she couln't be isolated for this event, supply more food n water dishes to avoid scuffles. sometimes just putting seed all over the multi-paper layered floor of the cage (without a grid of course) keeps them from bickering over food too. but one sheet should be removed to expose the new layer or sheet of paper beneath daily - with that many birds both eating n pooing there.

btw
are you sure it was the plastic thing that hurt her?

Hi everyone.  Yes it definately was the plastic thing that hurt her because my companion was here and he`s the one who got her unstuck.  She is doing so much better now a week later and she`s flying and hopping on both feet.  I`m still careful but yesterday and today, she jumped right into her bath 3 and 4 times in a row and had a splashing time.  I had to divide my vision cage in two for now because Tweety doesn`t accept her in the cage anymore.  He keeps attacking her.  He tries to plug out her feathers and hurt her and she scurries off.

Now I`m disappointed because they used to get along so well and since I took her out of the big cage and put her in a hospitaL cage right near him, he won`t let her back in the cage again.  I don`t know why that is.  Perhaps Marmelade is a male cause they are both about 4 months old.  Tweety is definately male because he can sing and sing but so far she doesn`t sing too much yet...  But even if she was a male, they use to get along so well before she got hurt.  I just don`t understand why he doesn`t want her in the bigger cage.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  As for Marmelade, I do believe she will make an excellent recovery.  I did put the spray type of polysporin on her leg while gently covering the rest of her with a face cloth so I would have to grab her or anything.  Just the way she hops around int eh cage with both feet and lands on both feet and can now raise her foot when she sleeps and takes lots of baths reassures me that she is much better.  Thank God for that.

Now if I could only figure out why they aren`t getting along anymore and that Tweety won`t accept her in the cage,  I could put her back with him and put the two parts of the cage together to make a much bigger cage.  Thank you again friends.

Sincerely,
Melle

Surely by doing what you want, you will KILL your bird.  They are fragile and will die from shock.  Never try to capture a sleeping bird for any reason.
