Heads up on this.

This morning, around 7, at 50th and Second Avenue, Manhattan, I saw a man netting pigeons as they fed.  I started after him from across the street, but he got into his light grey pickup truck and drove away.  He was on the short side, black, long hair, dressed in denim.  Just as he was driving away a police car pulled up behind him.  I foolishly assumed the officer would notice and stop him, but no.  He drove away with a sack holding birds and the officer got ready to go into Starbucks.  I crossed over and spoke to the officer but as I didn't have a licence plate number she would not do anything.

I am sickened to think some of my feathered friends shall be eaten tonight.

This will keep happening until a bill is put in for passing.  I think a group of us or even better if there is a lawyer amoung us who can write up a proposed bill so that these people who do the netting are fined a hefty fine and or thrown in jail.  They will keep doing it as long as they know they can get away with it.

Horrible! So sorry. I am so sad. You have to be able to TELL the police WHY they HAVE to do something. Because its AGAINST THE LAW TO TAKE WILDLIFE!! Then ask for their badge number and name politely - this should get them more interested in doing something.

My eighth grade teacher told me never to assume anything. Obviously, I never have forgotten it.

I strongly recommend from this moment on that anyone with any concern not assume anything. Acquire every bit of information needed. Do not rest on anyone else "helping" you.

Whenever a car is involved, get the license plate before you do anything else.

I too am sick over what will happen to those trapped pigeons.

Hello Gini and All,

Please call DEC Officer Tim Machnica. We called him in March in regard to pigeon nettings. Tim is in Manhattan and told us he would come to the location immediately if you call him.
Keep his number with you and also get the license number.

If you go to that location again, you may be able to get his license plate and take a photo if you can.

TIM MACHNICA
CELL: 845 429 5141
EMERGENCY 877 457-5680

Thank you for your activism and compassion.

This is something that someone should get FOX 5 involved in. Maybe if the netting problem received more media attention the cops and other authorities, not wanting to get the "shame on you," would be quicker to`act and spot illegal trapping. With Pigeon Day coming, it might prove a timely piece...maybe FOX would even set up a hidden camera at a location known for early morning netting!

They're not for dinner.  These pigeons are going to Pennsylvania for the little kiddies to shoot at with their brand new 22's.   It's a manhood thing.    The netters get paid per pigeon.    The kids get to know the difference between a rifle and their groin area.     You can't shoot and pee at the same time.
You should have gotten on top of the bastards hood and started a scene so neighbors come out thinking you're being attacked.   The netters don't like a commotion or pro-active antagonists.

Gini, what a shame for these trusting birds, and you are right, eaten or used for bait in training pitbulls to kill. The police don't care about pigeons. Seems they get a bad rap and I don't know why, they are so sweet and pretty.

Next time, get the officer's name and badge number and file a complaint.  Our tax dollars shouldn't be paying her income.

You should have asked for the badge number of the officer. Clearly you could have identified the van or she could have notified other officers. She should have been reported.

I also feel bad for those pigeons, as I usually feed them whenever I can.
On the other hand, catching pigeons and eating them, is no different than slaughtering chickens in modern factory farms, to be sent to your local supermarket.

Why didn't you start screaming stop murderer and cause a scene?
Then the officer might have done something.

Wow, I live down the block, and there always were a lot of pigeons on the ledges of the building on the NW corner with the starbucks in it. I rescued and returned one there many years ago. I have been wondering why there are no pigeons there anymore. So I assume when you mention 50th and Second ave you are talking about the NW corner. I can't believe this is in my neighborhood, I'm only half a block away, so I'll be on the outlook for this truck from now on.
