Dear Martha,

A few hours ago, the news broke that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has been selected by Sen. John McCain as the vice presidential candidate for the Republican ticket.

As a Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund supporter, you are no doubt aware of Governor Palin's dismal record, from her staunch support for special interests and Big Oil to her terrible assault on wolves and other wildlife.

As much of the nation wonders just who Sarah Palin is, I wanted to pass along my statement that I've just released.

Please read it and pass it along to everyone you know.

Thanks for your continued support,

Rodger

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shocking Choice by John McCain

WASHINGTON-- Senator John McCain just announced his choice for running mate: Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. To follow is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund.

"Senator McCain’s choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies.

"Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

"This is Senator McCain’s first significant choice in building his executive team and it’s a bad one. It has to raise serious doubts in the minds of voters about John McCain’s commitment to conservation, to addressing the impacts of global warming and to ensuring our country ends its dependency on oil."

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund provides a powerful voice in Washington to Americans who value our conservation heritage. Through grassroots lobbying, issue advocacy and political campaigns, the Action Fund champions those laws and lawmakers that protect wildlife and wild places while working against those that do them harm.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - She has irked environmentalists by opposing the listing of the polar bear as a threatened species and is a big supporter of oil and gas drilling off the Alaska coast.

Re: Sarah Paulin
I just e-mailed The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund to advise them that publishing articles without all the facts only hurts their effort, and yours for just forwarding e-mails blindly.

Alaska's only major source of income is oil. Ms. Paulin, in 2007, asked the U.S. Fish & Wildlife for a further study of the Polar Bear. She offered her department of the interior and her native tribes as aids in the research before polar bears were declared endangered.
By declaring them endangered in Alaska, it prohibits energy growth within her state, and for her people.

So maybe we should all just do some research and make our own decisions rather than having others tell us what to think.

There should be more drilling. The story is presented in a biased manner.

This is inappropriate crap.  If you want to turn this into a political forum, I can rip through the disgusting graft that Alaska's special agents had turned into prior to her miracle clean up.

Your post is crap.

This woman indicated that she is from a long line of hunters, enjoys the "sport", knows how to shoot and cooks moose stew.  Somehow I don't get the feeling that she is an animal lover and/or/ bird lover.

Vote 4 none of the above

This about birds not Dr. Jennifer Melfi

Please don't turn this into a political blog, else T is still out there.

Politics and animal rights/advocacy go hand in hand.  You can't separate the two if you are serious about helping animals.  It's all about politics and laws...who can do the most good for animals and the environment and who will use their influence and power to help birds and who won't.  To leave politics out of helping animals, is doing animals a great big injustice.

We should be equally appalled with John McCain's record on the environment and wildlife conservation, among other things.  In fact, John McCain has voted over 90% with George Bush as a senator.

So, as a group of people concerned about wildlife conservation and the environment, I think we should all vote for Barack Obama, regardless of John McSame's running mate.

This woman is very scary-not all women are for women's rights, in fact I often find the opposite to be true, unfortunately.
She thinks nothing of killing animals or oil conservation or global warming.  She would be perfect for Bush because he wants to drill in Alaska and McCain will do what big oil wants.  Bush does whatever his father and Cheney tell him to do.
By the way, did Mccain remember how many houses he has?  This would be 4 more years of the same.

Be very careful this election when you decide who to vote for.  We are at a critical point in our country which is on the verge of being ruined by those who have all the money.  Middle class workers support this country.

The issue has nothing to do with women's rights but with being pro-conservation, pro-wildlife and anti-hunting, and these are my only priorities when it comes to who becomes our next President.

About.com

VP slot: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who is no friend to animals. In 2007, Palin announced a $150 bounty for wolves. Why? Because wolves prey on moose and caribou, two favorite targets for hunters in Alaska. So Palin instituted a program to encourage hunters to kill wolves so that there would be more moose and caribou for hunters to kill. A lawsuit by Defenders of Wildlife resulted in the Alaska Superior Court ruling that the state Department of Fish and Game did not have the authority to institute a bounty program. A state program to shoot wolves and bears from the air continues, and on August 26, 2008, Ballot Measure 2, which would have stopped the aerial gunning of predators, was defeated by state voters.

Palin is also a hunter and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

In addition, Palin has sued the Bush administration to delist polar bears under the Endangered Species Act because the protection of polar bears interferes with drilling for oil and gas. Palin even penned an op-ed for the New York Times, explaining her scientific arguments against protecting polar bears. Isn't it funny how her op-ed doesn't mention drilling for oil?

Needless to say, from an animal rights standpoint, Sarah Palin would be a disastrous VP.

I had signed the petition to stop aerial shooting of wolves, many months ago.   Sad to hear that the voters defeated the referendum.

Moose and caribou is used for food by the Alaskan natives.   We have to distinguish this from HUNTING.   The latter is a cruel sport for the cowards who carry guns and don't have a life!   Palin said something about reaching out to the 18 million cracks in the ceiling, in reference to those who had voted for Hillary Clinton.   Her priorities are messed up as tries to be with the 'guys' in the Republican camp.   She would not have stood a chance in the Democratic camp.

Politics are an inherent part of activism for protecting the species and environment simply because the opponents are controlling the policy making machine through underhanded means.
