This condition sounds like a spinal cord/nervous system issue. A vet is needed. |

Reply with quote | #33 | Hello: Bird with weak legs...
I am pretty sure I know what this is: this is caused by a deficiency of a certain Vitamin known as:
Thiamine Vitamin B1...
Thiamine Vitamin B1 is an essential B-Vitamin; and what happens is: if the Bird does not have enough Vitamin B1; the nerves of the legs do not work correctly; and the bird simply cannot stand up;
another name for this conditon is "Beri Beri; and affects many animals and birds; B-Vitamin cures this
Protocol: a. Thiamin Vitamin B1 liquid drops in water b. Vitamin B-Complex liquid drops in water(has B1...) c. Rice Bran Pellets hi Vit. B1 d. Thiamine tablets crushed to a fine powder and then sprinked in water
Seeds: Sunflower Seeds (hulled ) very high Vit. B1
what is interesting about Thiamin B1 is: if a Bird has a deficiency of Thiamine B1; the only cure is Thiamin Choline; found in soymeal or soypellets; has Choline;
Choline is also beneficial for this type of leg conditon; I would suggest about 1 mg. Thiamine day; ask pharmacist or Vet...A.

Reply with quote | #35 | pps what is intersting is this:
In 1956 Eichman was doing experiments on chickens;
he found this
chickens fed white rice couldn't stand up
chickens fed brown rice stood up perfectly;
Thiamine Vit. B1 is deficient in the white rice;
this is how Thiamin Vit. B1 was discovered; in Rice Bran which is in Brown Rice only; not in white rice;
so i would suggest Rice Bran pellets for any Birds with weak legs; IF you want your bird to recover;
if the Vet. says a B1 shot? just go for the pellets; thx.

Reply with quote | #36 | ps it was 1856; not 1956; Thiamin Vitamin B1 was discovered;
in Rice Bran; the outer bran of the whole rice grain;
Brown Rice has Rice Bran; so get a mortar and pestle and make some Brown Rice into a palatable paste;
White Rice is a nutritonal wasteland; do not use; A.
Health Hint: Thiamin B1 first vitamin to be discovered

This is a hard one without seeing the lame dove, but it sounds more serious than just slow development. Do her legs and feet look the way they should though weak? As in well formed and straight bonewise, toes spread nicely and it seems to be a muscular issue? Or are the feet or a foot curled or the legs at a strange slant. Sometimes poorly nourished young dove's legs take on the curve of the "nest". I have a non-releasable dove who has that problem, her feet are so curled that she cannot sit a perch though I have read that little cardboard "braces" have now been used to help the doves with this issue if put on them young enough. There are also some viruses which can cause paralysis of the legs. |

Reply with quote | #39 | Hello again, yes the baby dove is free to walk around the house all day. (No fans, animals, kids, stove-tops, glass, nick knacks, wire, string anywhere to get into) I had his legs taped up ...he could stand and waddle around where he wanted to go. I was happy to see him using his legs so I took the bandages off after three days. Still a little weak and walking more sideways without it...so I put it back on. He is getting vit drops in his water, vit enriched food, and calcium powder across his food daily. He seems to be keeping weight off his left foot, and yes his toes do not spread very well on their own..but does stand erect with all out correctly with the bandages on. My other bird keeps him motivated and moving around to eat. Will try other methods soon if he stops using his left foot all together. i will use the research people have posted. thanks so much.
