A CBS 6 update on birds discovered abandoned at an Orange County farm: The group of macaws are now in a bird sanctuary in Louisa County. Yesterday, in a CBS 6 Exclusive report, Tracy Sears told you 31 birds were found living in filthy conditions. Officials we spoke to say the animals were stressed and appeared to have had little human interraction. They think the birds were not pets, but instead used for breeding. Experts at the Central Virginia Bird Sanctuary say this certain species of macaws, are highly intelligent and can fetch up to $10,000. You wouldn't know their value from the scene in Orange County. Bird experts say the tropical birds were kept outside, in uncovered cages and it's a wonder that they survived. Orange County Sheriff Mark Amos says the fate of the birds will be determined next week during a hearing. Pet adoption though is not likely. Considering the care of the birds, experts say would not likely make good pets. Charges of animal cruelty are pending against the bird owner. It's a misdemeanor charge that could mean a year in jail and up to a $2,500 fine. |

Well, guess what. This macaw confiscation was ORCHESTRATED by the local animal control person, ably assisted by the sanctuary owner, based on a complaint that the birds were abandoned. The complaint was made by a person who DISLIKED the bird owners and wanted to make trouble for them.
And, the so called sanctuary guy...30 years old...still wet behind the ears with birds, and ONLY experienced with budgies and cockatiels and a half dozen African Greys. Well, I guess he saw DOLLAR SIGNS... big donations coming in, because he is busy asking for donations. Of course, donations will be on top of the $6,000. a month he gets from the county for caring for the macaws. Apparently this is one of those "predatory rescues" who want birds for their PR angle...and what does the guy know? He had ONE pet conure! No experience with parrots to speak of...yet he is repeating what he has HEARD about parrots! And, thinks he can provide adequate care....
The macaws were EX-breeding birds that these kind people had taken into their possession to give them a life and good care. The birds certainly were stressed... stressed by strangers grabbing them from their flights and stuffing them into crates! These birds had been housed in large flights for 15 years...and now some strangers are grabbing them! Of course, they are stressed. And, two are missing...what happened to those? Did they lose them in the process? Or did animal control "give" them to someone, as often happens in these cases? Questions remain about the two.
But, bottom line...this was a PREDATORY CONFISCATION orchestrated by the local animal control who worked WITH the sanctuary guy...you might call it "officially sanctioned theft". Because the birds were not abandoned, not ill treated and not abused, nor lacking in quality food and fresh water and daily care.
Oh, the animal control also took the people's horse...but they returned it. There was no demand for horses by sanctuaries looking for some "poster horses" they could use to increase donations and further increase their "rescue business". Rescue has become quite a way to make a living for a lot of people who want FREE BIRDS and at the same time, MAKE MONEY because they have them! What an idea.
Furthermore, the cameraman making the comments about the birds and their situation, well, he was the guy who called the animal control because he has a bone to pick with the bird owners...you see, his best friend SCAMMED the owners and they are suing his best friend because of that!
So, a little research on the matter presents a far different picture than what was presented in the news article...an article focusing on the bad boys in the event.

Well, Laurella, no surprise to us that you will take the "side" of the captors of the birds just like in the Scudders matter. As a breeder, AFA "activist" and animal rights opponent we expect nothing less from you.
However, you make our point, thank you. No birds belong in ANYONE's captivity and regardless of all your little parsing of so called facts and making it sound like a junior high school fight, we maintain our position that YOU people need to stop breeding birds. Period.
When you get a chance, maybe you'd like to actually give some references to your statements. OR lemme guess, just like in the Scudders matter, only a "select" few (actually about two) of you AFA people actually were "allowed" (yeah right) into the facility to see the actual conditions after the controversy. BTW I will agree with you that this was small potatoes and probably WAS instigated by a neighbor or someone who was sick of hearing them yelling or something like that.
And if we do presume that the animal control guy was just a dope that was clueless, it still makes our point.
Remember Susan Clubb's auction? Photos of her breeders outside without perches? Let alone toys lol.
Well the public may not be savvy enough to know WHY YOU BREEDERS keep these birds in such despicable and austere conditions but its like porn,,,,you know it when you see it.
THAT'S why NORMAL people are disgusted by seeing birds in cages (not t o mention the even WORSE bare bones cages breeders are forced to live in).....even if the "care" meets your bare minimal standards of "non neglect" that are only acceptable to YOU BREEDERS, not to any other sane person. Even with the propaganda that you perpetrate through sellers showing birds playing with toys as if THATS all they need to be perfectly content. You know better.
Good luck trying and convince us that just because the poor birds have been kept this way for 15 years, that it's ok to keep them that way forever AND introduce NEW VICTIMS into the madness. (new breeders).
Pathetic and disgusting. Take up a new hobby. One that doesnt involve something that breathes.

Were they kept outside in uncovered cages 24/7 or not?
It's a simple question. What's the answer?

Why must you always defend the criminals and animal abusers Laurella. It does not make you look credible. Why don't you take responsibility for your actions and agree that this is ANIMAL ABUSE. What does it take Laurella? What is it you want from the poor animals? Are you bored, or greedy or what is it. Get another hobby that isn't alive. You are looking worse and worse everyday and losing credibility. Admit that animal cruelty and abuse has occurred here. Is your heart made of stone? No one has any respect for you, even your own breeder people from what I've read on Yahoo Groups. And your weak excuse, "well they are animal rights people". What a stupid reply. You are looking more stupid and malevolent by the day. Even other breeders are starting to think you are crap.
Be a real person and admit this is wrong. You seem to justify everything. What is your agenda? When you die, we will hold a celebration and hell will open up its doors to you, and may you burn there eternally locked up in a cage.

You are a very angry person, aren't you? How many parrots do you own? I imagine it is okay since you will call them rescues, right?
Someone needs to invite you and your cohorts to tea and lace the tea with a sterilization drug, effectively causing you to be sterile so as not to pass on your particular brand of stupidity to the next generations ... a fabulous way to thin out the idiot gene pool. |

You are a poster child for birth control. They have facilities for people like you. They are known as mental institutions.
And how many birds do you own? Its okay tho, because they are rescues, right?
You are all a giant load of bullsh*t. Human fertilizer. |

No I have never owned a parrot. A parrot does not belong in a home. |

Hey Laurella, tell the nice people what it was like back in the day of importation.
While you're selling a crock of B.S. about you and your idols of animal importation and abuse....tell the newbies how it REALLY worked.
While Susan Clubb was cranking out the processing of 100,000 imported parrots stolen from the wild every single year for freaking PET FARM INC, suppliers to the pet trade.
And your old fart idol Dr Seal was selling his load of crap about how only a captive bred program would save the wild species (thank GOD he's gone now, may he rot in hell).
And other illustrious American demons veterinary degrees were shipping out OVER 100,000 parrots stolen from their families every year to send to Clubb's PET FARM madness.
TELL THEM.
OK, I will.
1. It was decided that as parrots captured in South America were being "processed" by U.S. VETS over there, any of them with diseases should be euthanized.
So on average out of 10,000 in the processing chain, 2,000 were killed and 8,000 sent here. 20% murdered.
For testing positive for things like Psittacosis.
Just hanging around their tree minding their own business... get attacked, stolen, thrown in a bag, dragged for miles and miles to a factory, go through processing then get euthanized. NICE, LAURELLA.
Makes allot of sense right? Don't stick them back into the jungle.
(you COULDN'T BECAUSE THEY WERE ILLEGITIMATE AND STOLEN THATS WHY).
2. We all know that the conditions were so horrendous before and during shipping and getting here that frequently only 20% even survived the trip.
So of the original 10,000, ... 2000 get murdered and of the remaining 8,000 only 2000 arrived here.
RIGHT LAURELLA? And what about the Hy's??
Out of every 10 Hyacynths, only 2 survived the trip and usually those 2 died later. RIGHT LAURELLA?
3. THEN how many died after arriving at Clubb's PET FARM? And how many did she have to kill because they weren't viable?
4. THEN how many died onroute after she shipped them to their BREEDER and pet store destinations?
Forget it Laurella, you and your crew are despicable human beings. Knowing the truth and insisting on your fiction makes you people lower than low.
At least Germany stood proud of their destruction and plans for extermination in World War II.
YOU people, on the other hand are UNBELIEVABLE and cowardly.
You and your little friend Ullie Seal. HE GOES RUNNING AROUND CLAIMING THAT BIRDS ARE IN DANGER IN THE WILD, THEN YOU ALL GO AROUND KILLING THEM WHILE STEALING THEM FROM THEIR HOMES TO USE FOR BREEDERS HERE.
Dont you DARE talk about some idiot animal control guy offending some crackpot who wants to keep birds in cages outside etc etc etc.
YOU people created this mess. In the wild and in captivity. Stop trying to blame the few people around who actually care and try to help animals in some small way.
Excuse me while I go puke now.

Laurella, tell the people why they were killed if they tested positive for Psittacosis.
In case you're scared, I will.
Because in the wild, all the levels of everything are higher because they are fighting off various exposures. i.e. their WBC
Lesson learned? (well, no I know you'll never admit it...)
1. Lesson: LEAVE THE ANIMALS ALONE THEY WILL ADAPT
2. Lesson: STOP REWRITING HISTORY AND MAKING UP FAIRYTAILS AND FAKE EXCUSES. AND dont you dare talk about conservation.
And even if they didnt adapt I'm sure they'd rather be dead and go through what they went through and still do.
Because of BREEDERS AND THE AFA.
