This weekend I walked by Pets on Lex (Lexington, between and 77th and 78th). I went in to get some cat food and was totally APPALLED by what I saw. A man ( the owner I believe) was handling the animals violently and abusively.

There were cats in plexiglass boxes way too small for them to move. Most of the felines were nearly full grown - I'm beside myself thinking that they may be in those tiny boxes for up to a year or more. One of the cats was rolling in its litterbox - a behavior indicative of serious psychological stress.

Isn't there anything that can be done? A demonstration? A protest?

I went into that store once and that was enough for me.  I don't know if anything can be done but it there is, it would need to be very well organized, get permits, etc.   Anybody interested in doing the leg work?

I recently visited Pets on Lex for the first time last week and i was SHOCKED. I wanted to lay down in front of the store and beg people not to enter -- and I'm NOT a radical person, to say the least. The broken aquariums holding creatures at foot level, the cramped cages, dirty water, list goes on... Not to mention the dogs that look like they are being housed in something made for a bulk food store.. Thanks again for posting.

Those of you who made these observations and were shocked and awed, what did you do about it?  Did you report the abuse to the ASPCA?  Did you do ANYTHING?

If you get nowhere with the ASPCA, try contacting PETA.

Lorena, there is nothing the ASPCA can do.  As long as the animal is not seriously injured and not receiving medical attention; has water and food available, even if they are kept in tiny cages, never going out, with never any interaction with anybody, it's still within the law.   That's why we need to change them.   And, I seriously doubt that PETA will mobilize for one pet store in Manhattan, they have bigger fish to fry.

Devil's Advocate: The orignial Pets on Lex was a huge duplex-style store. The owners had to move, abrubtly, due to new construction (the old store was torn down). The current location is only temporary. I bought both my dogs there and have never had happier or healthier pets.

Have you gone down into the basement?  An ex-employee said it is a hell for pets.  They put the healthy animals in the store and the sick ones downstairs.  All pet stores have either a basement or a "back room".

Besides, Nicole, when they tell you they buy from local breeders they are telling the truth only if you consider puppy mills in Pa local breeders.  But we all know that there is a big difference between the two and, although technically they are correct, morally they are not.

I am happy your dogs are healthy and doing well but there are 6 million dogs and cats that are being put to sleep every year in USA because there are not enough homes for them, why line the pockets of somebody who exploits animals for a living when you can save a perfectly good dog from certain death?  All my dogs except for one are rescues, some were actually targeted to be put down (four of them to be exact, two because of aggression and the other two -Katrina survivors- because they were old and very, very sick -I lost a third Katrina survivor to a stroke), two were taken from their owners by Animal Control because of abuse, three were strays, etc. etc.  and they are all and without exception great dogs; beautiful, healthy and doing very well.  And, if breed is a consideration to you, there are lots and lots of young purebred dogs for adoption.

It is so satisfying to an animal lover to know that you saved a dog's life... try it next time you are thinking of getting another dog.

I was kicked out of this store years ago, the a**hole owner (or manager) got into a fight with me when I brought it to his attention that selling a parrot foot chain in the store was highly innappropriate and how could he stock such an item.  I asked him how he would like his leg to be shackled and told him it was cruel, dangerous, blah blah blah and this is when he kicked me out of the store. That store, I see, has not changed

Isn't Pets on Lex the store that used to be on Lex and 86th Street and moved because of construction of a new hi rise.  If that's the one, they are notorious for being rude, bullies and for mistreatment of their animals.  Look in the basement - they only put the cute healthy ones in the store.  The people working there act, look and sound like mafioses.  And the prices are outrageous - charging $1,200 and more for a kitten.

I went into Pets on Lex yesterday and I was disgusted!!!!!!!!!!!

The animals were so hot, no air conditioning!!!!
They were panting and breathing hard.......and the store managers yell at you.....the dogs are in plastic crates with airholes where they try to push their noses through the holes to touch you.......I am heartbroken!

who do I contact about this?????????

Try the contacts on this link.  I agree that the conditions in most pet stores are deplorable.  Unfortunately, there are SO MANY animal issues that it is difficult to focus on just one -- but the issue of animals in pet stores should take a priority.  It is very frustrating when you realize there is little that can be done.  But please try!!!

What about the ASPCA?  Isn't it their job to protect animals? I am assuming pet stores are not on the Bloomberg priority list.  As long as people don't complain to these agencies, things won't get any better for pets.  How about someone starting a petition and letting government know we aren't happy with conditions at this store.  In order for anything to get done, alot of people have to do something, not just a couple of people.  It takes a coordinated effort and people have to be willing to do something.  Unfortunately the system works that way.
